What you'll do
Each session lasts two hours. The first hour is for body and voice. You'll work on breathing, movement and diction, and get used to the rhythm of spoken Italian. The second hour is rehearsal.
The show is devised, which means the group creates it in rehearsal. Nobody hands you a script on day one. Each student develops their own character, and the ideas you bring into the room end up on stage. Music is part of the process too.
The last evening is a public performance at the venue. Invite your roommates, your friends and anyone visiting from home.
If you don't speak Italian
You'll be fine. Some students arrive with no Italian and others with a few semesters of it, and everyone works together. On stage, rhythm, breath and gesture carry a lot of the meaning, so you pick up the language by using it. The company calls this theatrical interlanguage.
If you already study Italian, it's a chance to use it out loud in front of people.
Who you'll work with
Francesca Accardi
Actress and soprano
Francesca graduated from the Accademia Nazionale d'Arte Drammatica Silvio D'Amico, Italy's national drama academy, and has worked with Luca Ronconi and Giorgio Albertazzi. She has taught acting, phonetics and diction since 2016, and since 2024 she has taught Italian to foreign students at Scuola Toscana in Florence. She also works in dubbing and has won three Premio Catel awards.
Johannes Bramante
Writer and director
Johannes founded Compagnia Coturno 15 in 2014. He studied at Central Saint Martins in London and wrote and directed a trilogy staged across Italy. In 2022 he published a novel about Botticelli with the Florentine publisher Maddali e Bruni, and later brought it to the stage.
Compagnia Coturno 15
The company
In 2024 the company won a City of Florence call for projects under Le Chiavi della Città, and staged its Botticelli series for Florentine schools in 2024 and 2025. It has also worked with artists from the Piccolo Teatro di Milano and the Stabile theaters of Turin and Genoa.
The room
Il Pozzo dei Desideri is a small performance space below street level in Santo Spirito, about a five-minute walk from Ponte Santa Trinita. It has a stage and about 50 seats, and bands play there on other nights.
It's run by a cultural association, so everyone taking part needs a membership card, called a tessera. We'll sort that out with you when you sign up.
2027 dates
| Edition | When |
|---|---|
| Spring | January to April |
| Fall | Mid-September to early December |
We planned these around midterms, breaks, public holidays and finals at the main programs in Florence, so spring pauses from March 5 to 29 and fall from October 18 to 29. Every program's calendar is a little different, so check yours first. Fall dates are provisional until February.
How to sign up
Write to us with your name, your program and the edition you want. We'll confirm your place and send you the payment details and what we need for the tessera. An edition goes ahead once at least 8 students have signed up, and each one stops at 10.

For program staff
ABROADWAY takes place in the evening, outside class hours. There's no credit and no academic approval involved, and students sign up and pay us directly, so it adds no work for your office.
If you'd like to see the space and meet Johannes and Francesca, we'd be glad to arrange a visit. We can also send you a flyer for your student notice board, and talk about a longer version or a private group for your own students.
